Sustainable Transport: Is the Global South Moving Away from the Car?

April 2016 — From Madrid to Helsinki to Paris, cities across the world have been banning cars in favor of cleaner and greener ways of getting around, including walking, biking and public transportation. And the shift isn’t just happening in Europe. Cities across the Global South are increasingly seeing the repercussions of car-focused development and are beginning to experiment with integrating sustainable options into city plans, from bike lanes to better sidewalks to cycle-sharing programs. Even small-scale initiatives start to shift mindsets, and the benefits not only help to unclog congestion but make a dent in addressing climate change, as well.

Bridging the Pedestrian Gap: Johannesburg’s attempt to pedestrianize a car-oriented city

Johannesburg, 13 April 2016 — The Transit Oriented Development strategy of the City of Johannesburg is producing a series of interventions intended to ease vehicular traffic and increase pedestrian safety, particularly along the BRT transit lines (known as the 'Corridors of Freedom'). Building flyovers: A part of sustainable urban transport system

Smart moves to curb traffic congestion

What a great initiative! The New Mobility Model seems like it is a holistic and multifaceted approach to tackling congestion and environmental issues! My only question is how does the model plan to switch car users to public transit commuters? Will more metro stops and integrated systems be enough to persuade those who take the car to switch? Or are there marketing schemes or congestion charges in the works?

Actualmente la Ciudad de México está poniendo a prueba todas sus instituciones relacionadas con la movilidad. Desde inicios de Abril, la Ciudad ha presentado la más alta concentración de contaminación e IMECAS en los últimos 14 años, debido a las altas temperaturas y contaminantes. En este sentido, el gobierno de la Ciudad instauró el "Hoy No Circula" un programa que restringe la circulación a los autos una vez a la semana, anteriormente era para los autos que emiten emisiones y ahora es para todos los autos aunque no contaminen. Con este programa dejan de circular un millón de autos de manera diaria, lo que arroja a más de un millón de personas a utilizar alternativas de movilidad como el transporte público, o el uso de aplicaciones como UBER. En estos días la movilidad se ha visto retada, los taxis han subido sus tarifas y el transporte público está sobre saturado. Hoy mas que nunca la Ciudad necesita de estrategias innovadoras para traslados de grandes distancias, que sean de bajo costo y de fácil utilización.

I wonder as this experiment started from Gurgaon, and in order to encourage replicating the same experience elsewhere, were there any produced statistics on the impact of these Free-Car days on environment and people's health and life so it can be published by NGOs to increase people awareness and expand the experience?

Achei muito interessante o seu artigo. Para mim uma cidade sem carros é uma utopia. Eu amo a bicicleta, gosto do transporte público, nunca tive um carro... Mas muitas vezes o carro é útil, por exemplo de noite quando está pouco seguro... E é difícil mudar os hábitos das pessoas. Então temos que pensar: O que fazer para que o carro seja menos poluente (carros elétricos, etc.)? Como fomentar usos mais inteligentes do carro como o car-sharing? Em Medellín eu acho que é necessário melhorar o sistema de metro, incentivar o uso da bicicleta... Mas são políticas de longo prazo. Talvez daqui a 10, 20 anos o metro será uma alternativa credível, mas agora os ricos não vão tomar o metro. A bicicleta ainda é vista como um transporte de pobre. A evolução cultural é lenta.... Então no curto prazo, é urgente sensibilizar a população ao compartilhamento de carros, incentivar carros elétricos, controlar emissão de poluentes da frota de ônibus, etc.

Thanks for your article, I really loved the initiative you presented. What most interested me was the positive impact on business. Here in Medellin they had the same debate. 2 years ago, they temporarily pedestrianized a main street of the city center (for ~ a month). Shop-owners feared a drop in business. They were wrong. Many activities were organized to use and promote the urban space, and the city center was flooded with people. It obviously resulted in a great increase in business. It was just a pilot initiative, but now that we know it only had positive impacts; the city is seriously thinking about pedestrianizing it permanently!
